Executive Summary

The main features/innovations of the DOGMA-DAQ-System:

Fault Tolerance

  • new DAQ paradigm: In large systems there are always faults, therefore a best effort DAQ is needed, so the DAQ never stops (no hangups). All data is valuable, so all data available will be recorded. Continue if parts of the system are down, e.g. due to scattered single event upset (SEU) due to radiation.

  • Automatic (inherent in the protocol) fast reintegration of rebooted systems (after SEU), results in higher reliability / high DAQ efficiency This allows the usage of commercial (cheap) FPGAs without issues due to higher SEU rate. This allows also for hot-swappable electronics.

Truly Scalable

  • completely based on optical communication for data and precise clock (better than 10 ps RMS) and trigger transmission, so complete galvanic isolation of all electronics to each other and the detector. This avoids GND issues (time precision degradation) and system size issues.

  • Arbitrary size of system without slowing down trigger-rate / DAQ-rate (no handshake latency)

  • completely based on scalable (and commercial) Ethernet for all data transport, which makes the upgrade to larger systems very simple. No need to develop self-made data concentrators. (Ethernet switches are very affordable and can be easily bought with Tb/s bandwidth)

KISS (keep it small and simple)

  • very compact design, also for small Frontend-Electronics (small FPGAs)

  • Maintainable by a very small team!

  • Usable by small and large experiments, not tailored to a specific application.

  • Can be integrated into other systems, e.g. CBM/PANDA-DAQ-systems or exisiting MBS-systems. Benefit from Dogma-features while still be part of the specialized CBM/PANDA-DAQ-systems or MBS-systems.
